Michael DeMers
Professor of Geography, New Mexico State University
I have been fortunate to know Dr. Schultz for about eight years now as a colleague and fellow NCGE board member. He is among the best there is at online geography/geology/GIS education. I know of very few who have the passion for geospatial education that he does or the ability to deliver it effectively in an online environment. He is dedicated, professional, knowledgeable and thoughtful; cares deeply for his learners and is quick to share his skills and expertise with others. All-in-all an amazing geoeducator.
Jeanne White
Professor at Elmhurst College
I have worked with Rich on several faculty committees and workshops. He is very organized and follows up on every idea and tries to get new ideas off the ground. He is dedicated to helping others, both faculty and students, in anything from technology to the tenure process. He is devoted to finding ways to improve his students' learning outcomes through the use of technology. He was the first person I sought out for help when I was implementing online learning into one of my courses.
Kathy Sexton-Radek

RIch Schultz is a talented, creative Associate Professor of Geoscience and Geography. He is a a team player in every way. His knowledge of technology and on-line educational platforms is outstanding. It is a pleasure to know and get to work with Rich.
Phillip Davis
Director at GeoAcademy
Dr. Rich Schultz and I have collaborated on several GIS related activities and projects since 2009. Rich has always demonstrated the highest level of professionalism, enthusiasm, and ethics in his actions. He is a well respected GIS&T researcher and educator. Rich's exceptional GIS program at Elmhurst College is an exemplar for other programs, especially in the private liberal-arts arena. I highly recommend Rich Schultz based upon his skills, knowledge and abilities.
Kelsey Caldwell
Alum of Elmhurst College
Not only did Dr. Schultz push his students in the classroom, but he also encouraged them to go out and earn experience while still in school. This included conferences, internships, study abroad opportunities etc. Now, I am sure this could be said about many professors, however, what sets Dr. Schultz aside from all of them is that he did everything he could to help his students gain the experience. Every student received email after email of job postings, conference memberships, scholarships/grants information to help afford the conferences/study abroad opportunities and so much more. He truly is an all-around professor and Elmhurst College is lucky to have him.
Russell Olsen
Professional Land Surveyor
Rich is a very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and effective teacher and program coordinator. He introduced me to this new field, GIS, and has aided me in every step along the way. Rich continuously searches for new arenas for GIS and new areas for excellence for his students and his colleagues.
Tracy Rogers-Tryba

Rich Schultz is a man with vision and passion, two qualities that are essential when dealing individuals and problem solving. My work with Rich, as a member and a Board Member for the Illinois GIS Association led me to know him both personally and professionally. Thoughtful, forward thinking, and "out of the box" are several words that describe his approach to tackling problems, big and small. It was a pleasure working with him as he is dependable to a fault. Rich is a team player, looking out for others, support those when needed, and jumping in when he personally sees a need that requires filling. I highly recommend Rich as a GIS specialist, a teacher, mentor and as a professional colleague.
Ken Foote
Professor at University of Connecticut
Rich is emerging as a leader in the areas of sedimentary petrology, GIScience, and geography & geoscience education. He has established a strong national reputation in these areas and he shows every sign of sustaining the same high caliber of work long into the future. In the area of teaching, I have always been impressed with Rich's range of expertise in methods of inquiry-based and problem-based learning, as well as by his leadership ability and classroom style. He is also an excellent writer and he has contributed chapters to two books I have co-edited. Rich has also invested considerable time in developing the curriculum in physical geography and environmental geosciences at Elmhurst College, as well as taking the lead in developing the GIS certificate program.
Carmella Burdi, GISP
Sr. GIS Analyst at Argonne National Laboratory
Rich is an amazing educator. He is extremely dedicated to his students and has helped many of them, including myself, succeed at life after university. Not only that, but his passion for geography and GIS is contagious. Working with Rich is a pleasure.

I am writing on behalf of Rich Schultz whom I've worked with over the past several years. He has an enviable record of scholarship in geography education and geographic information science. I am especially inspired by his work in promoting online education in geography. I recently had the pleasure of serving with him as a co-guest editor of the Review of International Geography Education. His editorial skills are sharp and insightful. Dr. Rich Schultz has my highest recommendation.
Jon Sedey
GIS Analyst at Cook County Clerk's Office
I had the pleasure of studying under Dr. Schultz while completing the GIS certificate program at Elmhurst College. Dr. Schultz is a great person and an outstanding mentor to work with. He advised me through the program and continues to be a resource for me as I work in the geospatial science field. He is talented, creative and always has a solution for problems when they occur. Besides the coursework at the college, Dr. Schultz opened new avenues for me in the GIS world. I highly recommend the GIS program at Elmhurst not only because it helped me succeed as a professional, but you get to engage with professors' like Dr. Schultz and other like minded colleagues.
Russell Olsen
Professional Land Surveyor
I was fortunate to have studied with Dr. Schultz at Elmhurst College. Not only did he teach me quite a lot about GIS and the related sciences; he encouraged me to expand my horizons, including giving presentations at GIS conferences. He suggested that I take up statistics; I took a class at COD, liked it, and now am enrolled at the University of Illinois Springfield, majoring in math (statistical analysis) with computer programming. He is a great person to work with, and has a wonderful outlook on his subjects. I recommend his programs whenever I get the opportunity.
Jim Kulich
Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Elmhurst College
Rich is a leader in the development of teaching approaches that take full advantage of both today's technologies and the accumulated wisdom of more traditional methods. Rich's work is respected and recognized by a wide variety of individuals and organizations on campus and beyond.
Dr Rich Schultz is one of the most dedicated people in the field of Geography and GIS and Education. His attention to detail, ability to motivate and inspire others, and technical and pedagogical expertise are all impeccable. He truly listens to others and has great hope and vision for the future. He is one of the professional community's greatest assets and a true friend to a great many of us.
Brook Windham
GIS Specialist / Database Administrator
In addition to taking several Geography and GIS related classes with Dr. Schultz, he was my advisor at Elmhurst College. He played an integral role in my education, giving me excellent advice as to the course path I should take and encouraged me to go beyond the classroom by attending industry events. As a teacher he created opportunities for students to extend the "classroom" to studies abroad in Australia so we could take our knowledge and apply it in the field. His classes were challenging and often would open a door to another class I may never have thought to take. As I move throughout the GIS industry, I look forward to working with Dr. Schultz again!

Rich is a very passionate and dedicated man not only in his work, but in also assisting students with reaching their goals. He helped me greatly become better person and student. He helped set me in the right direction and pushed me to strive and achieve my goals. I can say without a doubt, that his guidance and support helped me greatly throughout my college experience!
Diana Sinton
Executive Director, University Consortium for Geographic Information Science
Rich and I have worked together for several years as colleagues in the field of geography and GIS education. He demonstrates strong dedication to his students, his institution, and to this discipline. His organizational skills and knowledge base are solid, and he is always willing to contribute his time and energy to help others learn.
Linas Saulys
First Line Supervisor at ComEd
Rich is a professional professor who is passionate about his career. That means he has to make difficult discussion that his students don't always understand right away. Seeing the bigger picture allows Rich to mold his students in a proper direction that will make them successful in life. Down the road in my career I understand that the straight path is not always the best. I recommend Rich as a great Geospatial professor and life mentor.
James W. ("JW") Harrington
Professor at University of Washington Tacoma
I've worked with Rich on a number of national geography-related committees. Our closest and most sustained interaction was during an intensive week-long workshop for new Geography faculty from all across the US, several years ago.
Rich impresses me for his thoughtfulness, empathy, grasp of organizational dynamics and innovative ideas. This is an important combination, since innovative ideas don't get far without the ability to sell them as solutions to actual problems recognized by actual people.
More specifically, Rich is willing to consider and try new approaches to teaching, keeping student learning in the forefront, and to share those attempts and their outcomes with others.Drew Malone
Audi Brand Specialist/Sales and Leasing Consultant at Audi Exchange
As a student in Dr. Schultz Geology course I was thoroughly impressed with his passion for the subject, as well as his ability to grasp the interest of his students and help them succeed however he can. I was a student with a major other than Geology and I definitely enjoyed the learning experience and insight on how the physical world works in great detail. I was intrigued enough with Dr. Schultz course that I would gladly take a position involving geology if presented with the opportunity even though I was a business management graduate. I would highly reccomend Dr. Schultz.
Kevin Gibbs
Associate at Hickey and Associates
Rich is a great person to work with. He is thoughtful and certainly willing to listen to feedback and incorporate that if he believes it is necessary. He gives excellent advise and I respect his recommendations. When questions or concerns are raised he immediately responds with feedback, suggestions or is able to refer to the appropriate source for a solution.
Rich also allows a great deal of freedom and flexibility to achieve individual and group success.Margaret Foy
Senior GIS Technician at EN Engineering
Dr. Schultz is a great adviser when it comes to school courses, but also in advising my future career. His great network of people allows his students to interact directly to people already working in the field of GIS.
I have taken many courses with Dr. Schultz including: Earth's Landforms, Intro to Geographic Information Systems, Global Warming: Science Behind the Myth, NASA Climate Change Studies, and even traveled abroad with him to Australia for a mapping experience of Uluru.
I have hope that future geography students will gather just as much knowledge as I have from Dr. Schultz.Affiliations and Favorite Links
